The Casket of Ancient Winters was an artifact from Jotunheim capable of creating snowstorms.
After the Frost Giants attacked Earth and were defeated by Odin and the Asgardians, Odin took the Casket of Ancient Winters from Jotunheim and placed it in the Asgard weapons vault for safekeeping.
Odin's foster son Loki later tried using the Casket to confirm his suspicions about being a Frost Giant, and later still took it for himself and used it to freeze the keeper of the Bifrost Bridge, Heimdall.
